JUMP Math

JUMP Math

"JUMP Math is a numeracy program. JUMP Math is dedicated to enhancing the potential in children by encouraging an understanding and a love of math in students and educators. JUMP Math replaces the self-fulfilling myth that some people are born with mathematical ability while others do not have the ability to succeed with assumptions that all children can be led to think mathematically.

We offer educators, tutors and parents complete and balanced materials as well as training to help them reach all students.

JUMP Math draws on the latest cognitive science research to build upon the best aspects of math programs from around the world to provide a unique combination of depth, careful scaffolding, continuous assessment and a variety of innovative instructional approaches.

The JUMP Math numeracy program was started in 1998 by mathematician and playwright, Dr. John Mighton, an Adjunct Professor in Mathematics at the University of Toronto, Order of Canada, an Ashoka International Fellow, winner of two Governor-General's Awards for Drama and the prestigious Siminovitch prize.

JUMP Math became a registered charity in 2002.

JUMP has grown rapidly and is currently being used by over 85,000 children in over 400 schools, tutoring programs and at home."

We switched to JUMP Math after using Singapore Math for a year. One of the reasons we switched was the cost. JUMP Math is a lot cheaper than Singapore Math (especially if you live in Canada) and can be easily purchased from Amazon.ca and other places.

At first, I was worried that the workbooks didn’t have a lot of cute drawings and looked rather boring, but my autistic child seemed to prefer that. We ended up using the curriculum for 3 grades until I found another curriculum that I thought was a better match.

One thing that some people switching to this curriculum might not like is that it seems to be a little behind curricula like Singapore Math and that there is quite a bit of repetition in the workbooks. For some kids, that might be a good thing, but others might find it extremely boring. We, unfortunately, got tired of it and found a more challenging math curriculum which we switched to once we completed the grade 4 JUMP Math workbooks.

If you have a child who is easily distracted by drawings/pictures in his or her workbooks and needs more math practice, then maybe you should give this curriculum a try. Keep in mind that there are two different versions of JUMP Math - one is the complete curriculum and the other one is called "JUMP Math at Home". We use the complete one which has teacher manuals online (I never used those). Also, note that the workbooks do not come with answers to the math problems. You'll be able to find those on the JUMP Math website.
